A Hero does not die permanently. Battle damage lowers HP and can move the Hero into Wounded or Coma state. The Hero remains yours and recovers through regeneration or the available Gold recovery actions. If the battle killed the last of your troops where the Hero stood outside your villages, the Hero walks home, or, in Coma, is moved home to recover.
